The telemotor is a device for controlling Titanic’s enormous rudder, which is located hundreds of feet away. Telemotor control is a hydraulic control system employing a transmitter, a receiver, pipes and a charging unit. The transmitter, which is built into the steering wheel console, is located on the bridge and the receiver is mounted on the steering gear.

Under the command of Edward Smith, the ship leaved Southampton with 2224 passengers aboard, including some of the wealthiest people in the world, as well as hundreds of poor emigrants from Europe seeking a new life in North America. The ship had advanced safety features, but there were not enough lifeboats to accommodate all of those aboard. Inside the wheelhouse was located the main ship’s wheel, and immediately forward of it another binnacle housing a second steering compass. The wheel at this location was connected to a steering mechanism called a Telemotor. The 1997 movie Titanic portrays these two wheels. In Titanic's day water and glycerin were the hydraulic fluid.

There were two wheels mounted forward on the Bridge. The steam valves of these engines were connected to the Main wheel in the Wheelhouse via hydraulics (Browns Patent Telemotor). The stern docking bridge was directly connected to the engine and featured hatches that allowed engineers to drop down and check the engine.
The ships main helm was seated only a few feet aft of this spot and connected to this telemotor directly. The telemotor translated steering commands from the helm to the steering gear in the stern.
